10 non-trendy trends to try for 2018

There were many major fashion and beauty trends that dominated 2017. Sock trainers, ginormous puffer jackets, ultra matte lips, overpriced merch tees. I didn’t embrace a single one. But I did indulge in a classics revival or two. White denim, the Burberry check and western boots are a few that are still going strong. And Beauty Pie and Glossier were the two beauty bandwagons I couldn’t resist jumping on. For the coming year, my favourite unofficial visual search engine, Pinterest tells me that cleansing oil saves are up 555%, derma roller saves are up 345% and ‘vitamin C serum’ saves are up 3379%. I’m already converted to cleansing oils and I’ve only slightly dabbled in vitamin C – maybe this will be the year I go for it? Here are the other trends we’ll be seeing more of, that I fancy exploring… 1/ HI SHINE OUTERWEAR I’m almost phobic about wet January weather so anything that makes it more bearable is a win – such as all the hi-shine rainwear masquerading as high fashion. That’s Raf Simon’s Blade Runner styling (below), Burberry’s glossy flasher macs and even Prada’s trompe l’oeil wet-look polka dots. 2/ LESS IS MORE BEAUTY Sorry 10-step Korean regimes, you’ve been passed over for the simple life. Actually, there are a few new multi-tasking brands that take inspo from the innovation of K-Beauty without the labour. So look out for Krave Beauty (by south Korean skincare vlogger Liah Yoo) and Julep (launching in the UK at QVC this month), plus Lixir (below), which isn’t K-Beauty but is all about effective, no-faff products. And for the super time-poor I’m not sure if this is genius or ghastly, but it’s sure a lot of fun. Download the MakeupPlus app and take a selfie of yourself in all manner of makeovers without lifting a finger. (Warning: it’s addictive.) 3/ THE BASEBALL CAP Dadcore style is alive and well with omnipresent 90s Nikes and the baseball cap resurfacing as an unlikely accessory of desire. There are nil style points for wearing it to the gym or like an LA Instagirl however. I actually really like it worn with smart separates or a trench and boots (a la Suzanne Koller, below). I think a ponytail is a must though, which kinda rules me out… 4/ ENTRY POINT IT BAG If you haven’t heard of Staud you’ve probably seen it – on Lucy Williams, or any number of cool Insta Girl’s social media feeds. It was one of the new breed of affordable it bags that hit the jackpot last year. This year, Marais USA (below), Danse Lente and Wandler are the names to watch that hit the sweet spot of £300-£400 bags that are well made, just statementy enough, yet fit in well with an everyday wardrobe. 5/ AFFORDABLE LUXURY JEWELLERY As with the above entry-point bags, there’s been a flurry of new jewellery brands to fetishise. They’re simply sculptural, expensive-looking but fairly affordable, plus they’re extremely versatile. I love Laura Lombardi (below), Gabriela Artigas and Sophie Buhai. And I’ve just spotted these beauties from Lemaire… 6/ MEOW MEOW EYEWEAR Having finally found some round sunglasses that suit me (thanks Cutler & Gross), my next challenge is the cat eye sunnies. I know they’ll be the biggest cliché in the book by March, but I just have to try them. I loved all the retro-futuristic shades at Prada (top), and these at the Louis Vuitton press day (below). Any thoughts…? 7/ FEEL-GOOD FRAGRANCE We’ve become much more adventurous in our fragrance choices, discovering young niche brands instead of opting for the legacy giants. Don’t get me wrong, I love the legacy houses, but I like the boldness of the newbies too. New to market is St Giles, a niche fine fragrance house built on characters and feelings, such as The Tycoon, the Actress and The Writer. The brains behind the brand is every beauty editor’s favourite fragrance PR, Michael Donovan and the nose is celebrated perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour (whose CDG Series Three Incense Avignon is a classic). The line has been five years in the making and they’re all beautiful, sophisticated feel-good fragrances. My favourite is The Writer, billed as the scent of inspiration, thanks to its blend of brain-boosting rosemary absolute, ginger, rhubarb, leather and sandalwood notes. Buy it from St Giles or Selfridges. 8/ LOW KEY VERSACE There’s no such thing as low key Versace obviously, but as I mentioned before, I’m partial to 2018’s sportified retro Versace vibe. I could definitely see myself in one of these logo tees… 9/ SO LONG CÉLINE Now is the time to snap up Phoebe-era Céline before she departs in March. This double layered coat from her SS18 collection is classic Phoebe Philo and a possible future heirloom buy… 10/ ADER ERROR If you’re missing the old Vetements that was more about deconstructed classics than post ironic styling, then have a look at Ader Error. This elusive South Korean brand is also a collective but despite its 350K Instagram following, no one knows much about them. I love the products and aesthetic though.
